You can create a guided document experience for a fillable document in the Choose Experience section of the Document Builder when the fillable document meets the following requirements listed below:
- It is a fillable document with encoded fields.
- There are more fields configured than a signature field.
- All encoded fields and attributes map to store collected data.
This experience allows you to build an interactive, step-by-step guided questions to help candidates or employees fill out the document.
Create a guided document
Users with full access to Forms can follow the steps below to build a guided document experience for their fillable document.
- Create a new document by following the steps outlined here until the Choose Experience section.
- When you get to the Choose Experience section, select Create Guided Document.
- In the Completed By section of the builder, choose the preferred audience that you will add questions for in this builder.
- In the first section that opens for your selected audience, select the Add Question button.
You can also add a question to a section in the All Questions panel by selecting the + Add button in the upper-right corner.
- In the right panel, configure your question by adding your existing Document Fields or configuring a New Question. These processes are outlined below.
Add existing document fields
You can add your existing document fields that you configured in the Make Fillable section and map them to different questions by following the steps below:
- Select the desired document field to populate it in the section.
- Enter your question in the Type Your Question field.
- Follow steps #1-2 to add additional questions as desired.
- Select the Add Section button to add new sections to the guided document experience.
- For each additional section, follow steps #1-4 to configure questions for a section.
- In the upper-right corner, select Save.
- If needed, return to step #3 listed in the above Create a guided document section and repeat this entire process for another audience.
The Properties and Settings sections are view only. The document fields can be edited in the Make Fillable section.
Add new questions
- Select New Question.
- Select your desired field type. You also have the option to select Display Text or Media.
- In the Settings section for the new document field, fill out the following information:
- Mark as Required – Enable/disable this to mark the field as required or optional, respectively.
- Completed By – This populates with the audience that you are creating the guided document experience for.
- System Attributes – Select the System Attribute assigned to the field from the list of either Standard Candidate Attributes or Custom Candidate Attributes that have been uniquely created to store the data captured in this field.
- Validation – Select the validation type to ensure that the candidate answers the information in a correct and valid way. - Enter your question in the Type Your Question field.
- Follow steps #1-4 to add additional questions as desired.
- Select the Add Section button to add new sections to the guided document experience.
- For each additional section, follow steps #1-6 to configure questions for a section.
- In the upper-right corner, select Save.
- If needed, return to step #3 listed in the above Create a guided document section and repeat this entire process for another audience.
- Review the below sections to learn how to reorder questions, add conditions, or set multilingual support for this document before publishing the document.
Reorder questions into a section
By default, each new document field created for the guided document experience becomes its own section. You can reorder the questions and document fields associated with them to be a part of the same section if desired by following the steps below:
- In the All Questions panel on the right, select the question of choice.
- Drag the question of choice under the desired section.
- Once completed, select Save to save your questions under each section.
Add conditions
You can add conditions to sections or questions by following the processes outlined here.
Multilingual support
You can configure and use multilingual questions to your guided document experience. This logic follows the same multilingual form logic, allowing users to configure languages themselves that automatically translate.
To configure new languages, follow the steps below:
- In the upper-left corner of the audience section, select the English (default) button.
- Select Configure Languages in the bottom-right corner of the menu to see a list of all supported languages.
- Select each language that you want to configure in your guided document experience.
- Select the Apply button.
- In the Update Language Templates modal, select Confirm to confirm the addition of the language.
Your language has been added to the guided document experience, and all questions and options automatically translate. You can also edit the questions and options of the guided documents experience in the language by selecting the desired language in the dropdown menu.
Additional document actions
You can select the audience document's action menu, or ellipses, in the upper-right corner to open a menu that contains the following actions:
- View Document – You can select this to view the original fillable document.
- Preview – You can select this to preview your guided document experience from a candidate or user’s perspective.

Reorder Sections – You can select this to open a slide-out drawer that contains each section. From here, you can drag and drop the sections in the desired order.
- Note: You cannot reorder sections when there is a question used in a condition that you have previously configured.
- All Targeting – You can select this to open a slide-out drawer that contains all of the targeting rules for each section or document field. From here, you can select the Add or Edit button to further configure more conditional logic and targeting rules.
- Search bar – You can also search for questions and document fields within the search bar.
Publish the document
In the lower-left corner of the page, select Publish to publish and finalize your fillable document.
